The CareTech Foundation recently awarded a £500 grant to cover the costs for a member of staff’s family to travel to a distant hospital to care for their 12 month-old daughter who has been recently diagnosed with cancer. Below, Rose Callear – a Registered Home Manager with CareTech – describes why she applied for this grant.
“I was one of the Managers who heard about the establishment of the CareTech Foundation at the Caretech Care Awards in December 2017. I, like many others, was excited that the Foundation had been set up to help staff and their families who have difficulties – often out of the their control – and who can feel abandoned by their employers when they are at their lowest. I felt proud and inspired to be part of a company that puts its money where its words are!
I applied for a grant of £500 to help a support worker’s family with a 12 month-old daughter who had just been diagnosed with cancer. The family live in Stoke and the hospital where their daughter receives the chemotherapy treatment is in Birmingham, a 100-mile round trip. As he has taken compassionate leave to care for his daughter and his other child, the expenses incurred travelling to and from the hospital was adding an extra stress he really doesn’t need.
I spoke with Sara at the Foundation, who has been amazing and has genuinely cared about the staff member’s plight and has kept me informed all along the way. The Foundation sent the cheque last week and the staff member is overwhelmed by the generosity shown from the Caretech Foundation. On his – and my – behalf I would like to say a huge thank you to the Foundation and to Sara for her compassion and kindness.”
