Age UK- London Loo Alliance
Thanks to a £3,000 grant awarded in August 2025, Age UK London’s initiative, London Loo Alliance, has made significant progress in its first full year, helping create more inclusive communities through better public toilet provision.
Age UK London is part of the Age UK network but are an independent charity relying on donations and funding to continue their important work. They are the only charity that campaigns on behalf of older Londoners.

Over the last year, London Loo Alliance:
1. Influenced Local Elections:
Produced and promoted a manifesto for the 2026 local elections. Twenty-five local political parties across 16 London boroughs signed up to its pledges, including parties now leading six councils.
2. Reached London’s Public Health Leaders:
Increased engagement with the London Association for Directors of Public Health, resulting in resources being shared with every Director of Public Health in London and new relationships across the sector.
3. Raised the Issue with the Greater London Authority:
Built relationships with senior public health leaders at the Greater London Authority, strengthening recognition of public toilets as an important public health issue.
4. Growing a Stronger Alliance:
Expand the Alliance to 16 members. Also, welcomed new partners including Transport for All and Unite the Union, while supporting regular meetings and collaboration.
5. Influenced London’s Future Planning:
Submitted evidence to the London Plan Consultation, calling for stronger planning policies on public toilet provision across the capital.
6. Supported Policy Change:
Secured unanimous backing from the London Assembly for a motion calling for public toilets to become a statutory duty for local authorities.
7. Driven Public Awareness:
Delivered a successful World Toilet Day Action Day, generating media coverage, engaging London Assembly Members, and strengthening dialogue with Transport for London.
8. Shaped National Policy:
Contributed evidence to the Government’s consultation on an Overnight Visitor Levy, highlighting opportunities to invest in essential public toilet infrastructure.
9. Raised the Profile of the Campaign:
Increased public awareness through media appearances, social media, events, and conferences, reaching new audiences and building momentum for change.
10. Supported the Wider Change Beyond London:
Supported national campaigns, inspired the creation of the Coventry Loo Alliance, and contributed to the development of the first new guidance on Community Toilet Schemes for councils in nearly 20 years.
Trustees felt passionately about supporting the London Loo Alliance to establish itself as a credible voice for better public toilet provision, helping improve accessibility, dignity and inclusion for communities across London.

“On behalf of our staff and trustees, we are delighted with the impact of the London Loo Alliance. In a very short time, the programme has been able to get real-world outcomes that will have a lasting impact and have the potential to grow and positively impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Our trustees recognised the challenge faced by so many people due to a lack of access to loos, especially for those with disabilities. This restriction cuts them off from ever considering outdoor activities and increases their risk of isolation, leading to anxiety and depression. The London Loo Alliance is making critical progress to help resolve this issue and make London inclusive for everyone. We are incredibly proud to be a part of the initiative and look forward to its growth and continued success.”
