Disability Pride Month
What is Disability Pride Month?
Disability Pride Month recognises disability as a natural part of human diversity. It encourages disabled people to take pride in who they are, while raising awareness of the challenges many still face and inspiring everyone to become better allies.
The Disability Pride flag represents a broad community, including people with physical impairments, neurodivergence, non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities, mental health conditions, hearing and vision impairments, sensory differences and many other conditions.
While every disabled person’s experience is unique, many continue to face barriers created by inaccessible environments, unequal opportunities and outdated attitudes. Disability Pride Month encourages us to celebrate ability rather than focus on limitations and reminds us that everyone deserves equal access to education, employment and community life.
Why is Disability Pride Month important?
Despite progress, disabled people continue to experience discrimination and inequality. Research shows that three in four disabled people have experienced negative attitudes because of their disability.
Disability Pride Month helps change that conversation by highlighting the importance of accessible communities, inclusive workplaces and equal opportunities. When barriers are removed, disabled people can contribute their skills, knowledge and experiences more fully, benefitting society as a whole.
By valuing disabled people and investing in accessibility, we create stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
How are we making a difference?
The CareTech Foundation is passionate about leading positive change through partnerships that improve lives in the UK and internationally.
Supporting independence and inclusion:
Through our partnership with Motivation, we have helped transform mobility for people in Kenya. Over the past two years, the Foundation has supported 679 people to access the right wheelchair, trained 498 wheelchair users and helped establish a network of peer mentors, enabling greater independence and community support.
We are also proud to have partnered with Whizz Kidz, supporting young wheelchair users across the UK. Our partnership funded 14 Kidz Max Days, providing accessible adventures for 263 young wheelchair users, alongside 459 parents and guardians and 232 siblings. These events created joyful, inclusive experiences that built confidence and lasting memories.
Creating opportunity through employment and education:
Disabled and neurodiverse people continue to face significant barriers to employment, with the disability employment gap standing at 29.7 percentage points in Q2 2025.
Our partnership with Action For Kids is helping address this challenge by supporting disabled and neurodiverse people into meaningful careers in social care. Over three years, the programme will provide training and work placements for 24 young people each year, create pathways into paid employment and promote more inclusive recruitment practices across the sector.
Young Epilepsy is dedicated to championing children’s rights and advocating for an increase in understanding of epilepsy in schools and education settings. We support their Epilepsy Positive programme and Inclusion Programme, providing training to 200+ teachers and 40 care professionals, resources and accreditation. This helps professionals improve understanding and create more inclusive environments to allow children and young people with epilepsy to thrive.
Supporting communities around the world:
Our international partnerships enable us to share expertise and strengthen disability support in countries around the world.
Through our partnership with Sense International, we funded the screening of more than 86,000 children in Tanzania for deafblindness, helping children receive earlier identification and specialist support. We are now beginning a new three-year partnership to screen a further 100,000 children.
In South Asia, our partnership with MAITS has trained 408 disability professionals and community health workers, enabling 2,995 children with disabilities and their families to receive practical home-based support and early intervention. Our renewed partnership will further improve early identification, reduce stigma and strengthen access to healthcare and education.
Our flagship partner, SEN-I, delivers a pioneering Special Educational Needs (SEN) training programme in Pakistan. A staggering 9.64% of Pakistan’s population live with a disability, with literacy rates for disabled people at just 14%. To help address this, SEN-I will continue to train teachers across Pakistan, helping to build more inclusive learning environments for future generations.
How can you get involved?
Disability Pride Month is an opportunity for everyone to take action.
You can support the movement by learning more about disability, challenging stereotypes, advocating for accessibility and supporting charities working towards greater inclusion and equality.
For CareTech Ltd employees, our Match-Funding Grants help boost fundraising for causes close to your heart. From supporting PEDALL New Forest, where cyclists covered 3,200 kilometers in 12 hours to raise £10,000 for inclusive cycling, to boosting the impact of colleague Darren’s fundraising for Men’s Minds Matter after completing four half marathons in four weeks, these grants help good causes reach even further.
Our Community Grants also empower staff members to support their families, local communities and organisations making a real difference. Recently, we awarded £2,000 to Nickel Support, providing learning aids and sensory materials for at least 120 adults with autism and learning disabilities, helping them to develop skills for a more purposeful life.

Building a more inclusive future
Disability Pride Month reminds us that inclusion should not be limited to one month of the year. By celebrating disabled people, challenging harmful attitudes and supporting organisations that remove barriers, we can build a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
At the CareTech Foundation, we are proud to work alongside partners who are creating lasting change. Together, we can continue championing equality, promoting inclusion and ensuring disabled people have every opportunity to reach their full potential.
