Sense International

Early Identification and Intervention for Children with Deafblindness in Tanzania.

Funding by the Foundation enabled the screening of 86,492 children for multi-sensory impairment (deafblindness) in Tanzania. Additionally, the programme was established in Dar es Salaam, one of the largest cities in Tanzania with high levels of poverty. As part of the programme 76 health care workers were trained on how to conduct sensory screening in 24 primary healthcare facilities and hospitals. Once a child was identified as having a sight and hearing problem, the child was referred to Sense International’s early intervention services where they received dedicated support helping them to thrive. 383 children were diagnosed with sensory impairments and provided personal development plans along with their parents/carers to enable them to live fulfilling lives by developing essential skills.
