We are delighted to have been able to match-fund for Raj Majid, Education Coordinator from the West Midlands, who completed the The Shine Night Walk for Cancer Research UK. With the support of the Foundation, Raj raised over £2,000 for such an important cause. Below, Raj shares her journey and what the support of the Foundation means to her:
“At the beginning of 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer; if you have ever met somebody going through cancer treatment, you will know that it’s tough. The endless rounds of chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiotherapy takes its toll – not just physically but mentally too.
Prior to the diagnosis I was healthy (or so I thought), active and independent I liked nothing more than being able to go for a run or my regular yoga class. So in contrast; not being able to walk unsupported for 50yards during the treatment, was difficult to deal with. I would have my chemo treatment on a Friday and not be able to leave the house until the following Thursday, when a close friend would pop over and help me walk to the corner of my street and back. Slowly I would build this up and by the end of the following week I would be able to get back to some normality, of the school run and short walks but nothing like what I had been able to do prior to cancer. Until the next round of chemotherapy and again slowly re-building myself to be able to complete very basic tasks.
Since my treatment ended in March 2020; I have pushed myself to get the old me back. So being able to walk 10k to raise money for Cancer Research has been an experience that I will never forget – it has helped me to reflect on far I have come over the last 2 years, the challenges I have overcome and how lucky I am to have had the support of friends and family.
Unfortunately more and more people are suffering from cancer. Therefore there is an urgent need for charities such as Cancer Research who are pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and have helped save millions of lives. I am grateful that I have been given a chance to walk again and help this charity to save more lives.
Thank you CareTech Foundation for your valued contribution of £250; which has helped bring my total to £2,093.50.”
